[Tuesday] Unit 4 - Week 1

Play 2 hours of the following VR games:

“The Under Presents” and “Half-Life Alyx”.

In order to get you all through both games before Mid April, you really need to book your time in the lab as soon as possible. Other classes are also using the computers for their class assignments. Here are the following instructions in order for you to reserve a VR station in the Immersive Media Lab.

PLEASE NOTE: When you reserve the VR station you have to select the specific computer that has both games installed under the steam account assigned to the computer. You don’t need the steam account as the student staff who work in the lab know the username and password to get you logged in.

In order to book your VR station to play the 2 games: (You can book up to 4 hours at a time).

  1. Please go to the following online booking calendar for the CAMD Immersive Media Lab: https://www.supersaas.com/schedule/Immersive_Media_Labs/Book_VR_or_AR_computer_stations

  2. Then select your day and time

  3. Then if you are going to play both games during the same appointment then please book 4 hours. If you are going to play each game on a different day then please select at least a 2 hour block of time to get through each game.

Jason needs to know of any issues you are having while you are in the lab so they can fix them right away. They try our hardest to always make sure everything goes smooth for everyone using the lab but if issues come up please let us know right away.

Post a 500-1000 word response about your experience playing the game below. The response serves to show that you played beyond the intro of the game and will be the basis for the in-class discussion. Consider what things in the game you responded to and were frustrated by, as well as anything that was inspiring.

Speding so much time at the ˘VR Lab, I got a chance to play a lot of different types of VR games, and Half Life Alyx has got to be the best game so far. That said, I would strongly recommend SuperHot to anyone who had fun with these two games.

I personally loved The Under Presents, mostly because of its spacey and bizzare plot.

The setting reminded me of a drama,5 setting aside the fact that we were all spirits doing magic, and teleporting throughout discrete parts of the tale while messing around with space and time.

I played till the scene with all the bottles around us and we can look into them to see a world and…

Firstly, for someone who hasn’t experienced VR as much, apart from playing the Resident Evil BioHazard, this experience has given me a different perspective of VR and left me wanting more. I started to understand how much more of a complete experience can be provided to the players with the help of VR. Now let’s get a bit into the two games.

Half life Alyx:

I have started off with this game and from the moment it started I felt immersed in the world. The first 10 minutes I just spent on the balcony looking around the world, experimenting what all stuff I can do, grabbing cans, CDs, throwing stuff off the balcony, trying to throw the cans into the…

Half Life Alyx:

For me, the biggest dilemma of playing VR games is the inescapable vertigo. Later I learned that such condition is called motion sickness. More than once I need to stop to take a break and drink water to suppress the nausea. Speaking of the game itself, Half Life Alyx is undoubtedly a milestone in the development of VR games. The richness of its game content and the exquisite depiction of details are unmatched by any VR game known on the market (personal opinion). Of course, I will make some more critical assessments. Shooting is beyond my expectations, actually lifting the gun with one's own hand, pulling the trigger, and reloading with the other hand - a real…

Half life:

The good:

This is my second time playing Half Life Alyx, and I’ve deepened my respect for environment design. Things I’ve noticed that worked really well for guiding players:

  • Elevation of the environment

In this part, the environment has always been interesting to look at since the spawn scene (you can see the height difference of buildings up close and in the distance). Even in the tutorial part, there’s multiple times of going up and down stairs, climbing ladders (players will have different perspectives even though they’re not moving great distances horizontally) The first scene after the tutorial (after the player gets off the train to the control panel) it felt like walking a great distance, but the…

I played the "Half-life: Alyx" and "The Under Present" games. Playing both games was a unique experience for me. Both the games are different from each other, the first is an FPS survival game, and the other is a combination of VR and immersive theatre. Playing games on VR brings me dizziness, but it was less in front of what I learned from those games.

The Under Present game was a different kind of experience for me. First, it was nice to watch your hands generating and then the golden rings in your hands, stating that you now have the power to teleport and do magic. However, the Scrunch Teleport mechanic caused me motion sickness. There were no instructio…
